Skills Can Be Taught—But Personality Is What Really Counts
Skills Can Be Learned—But Personality Is What Really Counts
I’ve worked for Indian firms, and what I’ve realized from the experience—and what I’m realizing now as I look for jobs in the UK—is that skills can be replaced or acquired, but personality and attitude really count.
Right now, I’m actively looking for opportunities in digital marketing in the UK, and while updating my CV, going through interviews, and speaking with people in the industry here, I’ve noticed something important: employers don’t just want technical skills. They want someone who will fit into their team, adapt quickly, communicate well, and bring the right mindset to the table.
What I’ve Seen (and What I’m Learning)
Back in India, I was working as a professional in work environments where skills definitely came into use—but attitude, team play, and character were also accorded a great deal of significance. This is even more so in the UK.
Firms here are happy to train you with the tools and systems, especially for fields like digital marketing that are constantly evolving. But what they care most about is that you are:
Eager to learn
A great people person
Positive and proactive
Able to communicate clearly and accept feedback
Bottom line: your attitude and personality are as crucial—if not more so—than your technical skill.
Why This Is Encouraging
Honestly, it makes me feel hopeful. I may not know everything about every tool or trend just yet, but I’m learning daily, staying up-to-date, and doing all I can to improve. Better still, I know that I have a good work ethic, a creative mindset, a willingness to learn, and an attitude to be a team player.
And from everything I’ve learned so far, that is exactly what UK employers desire.
My Message to Others Looking for Work
If you’re like me—wanting to work in the UK, possibly a career change or starting anew—don’t lose hope. You don’t need to have it all together or be perfect at all talent.
Listen to:
Your will to learn
Your people skills
Your mindset
Let that be reflected in your interviews and applications. Because ultimately, skills can be learned—but the correct attitude is invaluable.
